Fake news story about Chiefs coach criticizing Taylor Swift taken out of context on social media

If Your Time is short

This claim originated on a self-described satire site.

Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift started attending Kansas City Chiefs games during the 2023 season to support boyfriend and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, and she’s been spotted in the stands for the 2024 season, too.

But recent social media posts have claimed the team’s head coach has turned on Swift.

"Chiefs' Coach Andy Reid criticizes Taylor Swift: ‘You’re not a good role model,’" a Sept. 17 Facebook post said.

This post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and Threads.)

A Chiefs spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to PolitiFact’s questions about the post, but we found no evidence to corroborate it.

There’s no credible news coverage or public statements from Reid or the Chiefs criticizing Swift as a bad role model.

Rather, this claim appears to have originated on a self-described satire page.

"Chiefs coach Andy Reid confronts Taylor Swift ‘You’re not a good role model,’" said a July 1 post on the SpaceX Fanclub Facebook account. The post said "labeled satire" and the account’s page bio noted that "nothing on this page is real."

A couple weeks after the post was published, Reid appeared on a podcast and praised Swift and Kelce’s relationship.

"I think it's great for him," Reid said. "Matter of fact, I think he probably loves it to a point. I think there's a great escape for him. I said that about Taylor, too. She comes to the game, she can kind of escape having to be the show, and Travis can do that. When he goes to her concerts, she's the star and he can be hanging out there and be the support, the waterboy. He can do that."

We rate this post False.
