Our No. 1 readers' favorite fact check developed after an Austin American-Statesman reporter, Kate Alexander, heard a rousing East Texas speech by Craig James, the onetime sportscaster then seeking the Republican U.S. Senate nomination.

In his remarks, James said: "Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are negotiating with the United Nations about doing a treaty that will ban the use of firearms."

Ka-POW!

Except: We found no evidence of Obama or Clinton indicating they wanted the UN conference on an arms trade treaty, which occurred in July 2012, to ban the use of firearms. An  Obama administration underling gave a speech saying the government would not back a treaty infringing on the Second Amendment.

Pants on Fire, we concluded.
