Rick Perry claim in running for "Lie of the Year"

Stumping in New Hampshire this August, Texas Gov. Rick Perry maintained that scientists are doubting the theory that man is contributing to global warming.

"I do believe that the issue of global warming has been politicized," Perry said. "I think there are a substantial number of scientists who have manipulated data so that they will have dollars rolling into their projects. I think we're seeing it almost weekly or even daily, scientists who are coming forward and questioning the original idea that man-made global warming is what is causing the climate to change."
   
Perry, who had just embarked on his bid for the Republican presidential nomination, added that plans to address climate change by limiting carbon emissions would cost "billions, if not trillions" of dollars and that the United States should not spend that much money on "scientific theory that has not been proven and from my perspective is more and more being put into question."

Perry’s claim later rated False on the Truth-O-Meter. There's consensus among major scientific organizations about mankind’s role in global warming and skeptics comprise a small minority.

But his claim has new life of sorts. It's in the running for PolitiFact’s "Lie of the Year," along with nine other statements — four rated False, the others rated Pants on Fire. The nominees include a pair of claims by President Barack Obama and single claims by two other Republican presidential aspirants, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota.
