Two days after the United States hit its $14.3 trillion limit on borrowing, the National Republican Congressional Committee accused Democratic lawmakers, including U.S. Reps. Ruben Hinojosa of Mercedes and Henry Cuellar of Laredo, of being financially irresponsible.
On May 18, the committee issued similar press releases targeting Hinojosa, Cuellar and 58 other Democratic House members, including Rep. Betty Sutton of Ohio. Each statement said the representative and his or her "fellow Democrats" had gone on a "spending spree and now their credit card is maxed out."
Our colleagues at PolitiFact Ohio investigated the claim. They found reasons to be skeptical.
