Joining calls for Congress to require background checks before all gun purchases, Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell says Americans widely back the prospect.


Ninety percent of Americans and 74 percent of National Rifle Association members support universal background checks, Leffingwell said, the Austin American-Statesman reported in a news article posted online the day he spoke, March 28, 2013.


His claim held up, we found, though the poll he relied on for NRA-member sentiments folded in current and former/lapsed members; a more recent poll was limited to current association members.
