Did Blue Cross/Blue Shield ditch Texas in early 2016?

We wondered after Sen. Ted Cruz declared in January: "Blue Cross Blue Shield cancelled all their individual (health care) policies in the state of Texas, effective Dec. 31," 2015. Our look into the claim proved our No. 3 most-clicked fact check from the year.

Actually, the company continued to sell coverage all over the state, according to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas. The company also said individual customers like Cruz were notified months before 2016 changes—including an end to individual PPO plans--kicked in.

So, Cruz was both incorrect about Blue Cross’ offerings in Texas and evidently mischaracterized how his own coverage came to lapse.

We rated Cruz’s statement PANTS ON FIRE!
