Julián Castro was born and raised in San Antonio, where he became a city councilman and eventually the mayor.
Castro is the only Latino running for president. He lauds his family’s immigrant background as a driving force for his public work. Castro says his path to public service began when his grandmother came to the United States from Mexico at seven years old.
"My family instilled in me the value of hard work, service and above all responsibility — for ourselves, our community and our future," Castro said on his campaign website.
Castro stepped into the national spotlight in 2012 by delivering the keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention. In 2014, President Barack Obama picked him as the next secretary to lead the Housing and Urban Development Department.

Castro’s presidential campaign touts "People First" policies. He proposes overhauls of the education and immigration systems. Castro advocates for an universal preschool program for 3- and 4-year-olds and for more accessible post-high school education, by eliminating tuition at public universities, community colleges, and technical and vocational programs.
His immigration agenda includes a pathway to citizenship for immigrants in the country illegally and a restructuring of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
