After a criticized debate performance and calls from within the Democratic Party to step aside, President Joe Biden announced July 21, 2024, in a letter posted on social media that he was dropping out of the 2024 presidential race. 

Biden quickly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination. Delegates will meet in August at the Democratic National Convention will decide who will be Biden's successor.
