In a letter posted July 21 from his social media account, President Joe Biden announced he was dropping out of the 2024 presidential race after calls for him to do so from within the Democratic Party. Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the ticket in November.

Biden’s June 27 debate performance, which was widely panned including by some Democrats, led some in his party to fret about whether the 81-year-old could defeat former President Donald Trump, the newly minted Republican presidential nominee, in November.

Because Biden cedes the nomination on his own, the delegates allocated to him during the primary season will decide his successor in August at the Democratic National Convention. Because these delegates are almost entirely pledged to him, Biden’s endorsement of Harris will carry significant weight. Delegates can technically opt to support a different candidate.
