The truth about congressional pay raises

Recently we checked a claim from Florida U.S. Senate candidate George LeMieux, who accused his Republican primary opponent U.S. Rep. Connie Mack IV of voting to raise his own pay in Congress.

What we found out was more interesting than we even thought.

Thanks to a 1989 law, members of Congress are subject to automatic annual pay increases. That means members can avoid taking awkward floor votes to raise their own pay.
